Here's what you need to know about the IEC:

  • Mandatory Requirement: Any entity or individual planning to engage in international trade (import or export) in India must obtain the IEC. Without it, one cannot legally import or export goods or services.
  • Lifetime Validity: Once issued, an IEC does not require renewal and is valid for the lifetime of the entity or individual, unless it is surrendered or revoked.
  • One-time Registration: A business entity needs only one IEC, regardless of its number of branches or business units. The IEC will be the same for all branches or divisions of the entity.
  • Exemptions: Certain categories of importers and exporters are exempted from obtaining the IEC, based on the nature and type of their goods or the specific guidelines provided by the DGFT.
  • Primary Document: The IEC acts as a primary document for recognising an importer/exporter and is often required by customs authorities and other stakeholders in the international trade process.
  • No IEC for Personal Use: Goods and services that are imported or exported strictly for personal use and not for any commercial or trade activities do not require an IEC.
